Men's Lacrosse Tops Eastern, 10-7, in First Round of MAC Tournament

Widener pulled away in the third quarter with four straight goals en route to a 10-7 victory over Eastern in the first round of the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
 
Third-seeded Widener (9-8) improves to 16-2 in this tournament as it began the quest for a fifth straight title. The squad advances to the semifinals Wednesday against No. 2 seed Lycoming, beginning at 4:00 pm in Williamsport, PA.
 
No. 6 seed Eastern (7-8) gave its all and had Widener on its heels as Matt Wagner scored with 10:11 left in the third quarter for a 4-4 game.
 
But the Pride buckled down. Sophomore Shawn DeHaven (Lyndell, PA) scored with 8:11 left in the period and junior Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA) followed suit with 6:10 remaining for a 6-4 contest.
 
Freshman Mark Kane (Morton, PA) tallied with 5:21 to go in the quarter and Malampy scored another with 3:25 left for an 8-4 contest.
 
Malampy scored a season-high four goals with sophomore JJ Hoeffler (Cranford, NJ) and freshman Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) netting two apiece for the Pride. Freshman Brian Rogers (Malvern, PA) had three assists, freshman Nick Fluharty (West Grove, PA) won 12-of-19 face-offs and sophomore Kevin Carney (Ridley, PA) made nine saves.
 
Wagner, Nick Mandia and Nate Trunfio netted two goals apiece for the Eagles.

Sam Baer
Women's Soccer

Senior Sam Baer was named Widener's Women's Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

Baer capped a remarkable career by being named All-Commonwealth Conference a fourth straight year, picked to the first team a third consecutive season and third team All-Middle Atlantic Region.  She was named second team all-region in 2008.

 

Baer ends a spectacular career in which she was tabbed second team all-league as a defender in 2006, first team all-conference as a forward in 2007 and first team as a midfielder the last two years.  She graduates first in school history with 40 assists, second with 29 goals and second with 98 points.

James Woodley
Football

Senior James Woodley was named Widener's Men's Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

It was another standout campaign for Woodley, who was tabbed first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference a third straight year and second team All-East Region by D3Football.com.  A four-year starter who constantly drew double teams, Woodley ended tied for fourth in the conference with 14.5 tackles for a loss, tied for eighth with 5.5 sacks and tied for 23rd with 5.7 tackles per game.

 

Woodley, who was invited to the East Preps Football Combine, had 19 tackles to tie for the third most in school history, 14 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks and five tackles for a loss October 31 against Lebanon Valley.
