READING, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team battled with Alvernia into extra innings, but the Golden Wolves pushed across a run in the top of the 11th as the Pride fell in the MAC Commonwealth Championship game 6-5.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• Widener had seven hits in the game, by seven different players.
• Brandon Reis, Tommy McParland, Nick D'Alessandro, Daren Wood, and Brennan Taylor each drove in a run.
• James Dougherty tossed 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Widener jumped on the board in the third as a Tommt Scharnikow double, a walk to Brennan Taylor, and a single by Matt Samson loaded the bases. A groundout scored the first run of the inning and left runners on the corners. On a perfectly executed hit-and-run, D'Alessandro singled through the right side, plating Taylor to make it 2-0.
• After D'Alessandro stole second, Stephen DeBellis was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Wood knocked in a run with a fielder's choice, keeping the sacks full. Two batters later, Reis was hit by a pitch to score the final run of the frame.
• Alvernia rook a couple innings to respond, scoring five times in the sixth.
• In the bottom of the frame, Reis singled with one out and moved up on a passed ball. Two batter later, Taylor singled to bring home the runner, knotting the game at 5-5.
• The Blue and Gold nearly won the game in the 10th when DeBellis drove a ball to the wall before it was hauled in for the out. The Golden Wolves pushed across a run in the top of the 11th to claim the contest.
