Men's Soccer Advances to MAC Commonwealth Semis with 2OT Victory Over Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. (Nov. 2, 2015) – Freshman Kevin McKenna (North Wales, Pa.) notched the game winning goal in the 107th as the Widener men's soccer team earned a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Arcadia in the play-in game of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament on Monday evening.
 
McKenna put home a cross from senior Ross Staudt (Marlton, N.J.) to send the Pride to the semifinal round of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
 
Widener improves to 9-9-1, while Arcadia falls to 11-6-3. The Pride advance to the semifinal round for the first time since 2008, where they reached the final.
 
Senior Tori Remondelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) gave the Blue and Gold a goal advantage just prior to half-time. The midfielder headed home a corner kick from sophomore John Colbert (Louisville, Ky.) for his 12th goal of the season.
 
Brian Martinez tied the game up at one-apiece in the 63rd minute of play. The Knights midfielder recorded his first goal of the season on a free kick.
 
McKenna initially gave the Pride a one-goal lead with just over fifteen minutes remaining to play as he connected in the 74th minute of the conference tournament opener. Remondelli and junior Tommy O'Keefe (Lutherville, Md.) added the assists for the freshman forwards fifth goal of the year.
 
Shortly after McKenna gave Widener a lead, Danny Herrea recorded the equalizer in the 79th minute of play. Herrea's third goal of the campaign was assisted by Derrick Brewer.
 
Junior David Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) recorded six saves on eight shots faced in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament match-up. Widener outshot the Knights, 18-17 with ten shots on net for the Pride. The Blue and Gold forced Chris Watson to make six saves and one team save in the double-overtime game.
 
Widener will travel to Williamsport, Pa. to take on top-seeded Lycoming in a MAC Commonwealth semifinal match on Wednesday, November 4th at 2:00 p.m.
