Men's Soccer Handed a Shocking Overtime Loss by Gwynedd-Mercy, 1-0

Boxscore (box score)

Widener dominated position of the ball for 90 minutes of regulation, but it was Gwynedd-Mercy who stole the game in overtime and exited with a 1-0 triumph at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Widener (4-4-1) led in shots 18-5 and in corners 8-2. The Pride controlled every aspect of the game in both halves and was passing the ball around at will. The only thing Widener could not do with the ball was score it.

Widener's senior goalkeeper Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia) finished with three saves, but hardly had to move late in the contest.

Gwynedd-Mercy seemed to be playing for a tie as the coach brought eight men back on defense. No matter what Widener's offense did they could not capitalize on their opportunities and the game remained scoreless going into overtime.

Freshman Max Reid (Munich, Germany) recorded five shots in the contest and both junior Troy Czapor (Richboro, PA) and freshman Tommy O'Keefe (Lutherville, MD) managed two shots a piece.

The Pride went into extra time trying to find any way to get past the Griffin defense. Nineteen seconds into overtime, however, it was Gwynedd-Mercy's forward Dan Panepresso who intercepted a Widener pass, made a move around a defender and shot a ball past Valdner for the lone score of the match.

Widener will be back in action at Lancaster Bible College on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
