Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Teams Open Campaign at Villanova

Widener's men's and women's indoor track & field teams got the 2013-14 campaign underway by competing at the Jack Pyrah Invitational in Villanova, PA.

Senior Eric Solomon (Columbia, PA), an All-America last season in the weight throw, again continued his winning ways by taking this event at 16.55 meters. He also is the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference and ECAC indoor weight throw champion.

Junior Mike Recla (Bloomsburg, PA) easily captured the shot put at 15.07 meters and was second in the weight throw by covering 16.16 meters. Senior Dennis Nguyen (Springfield, PA) was victorious in the pole vault at 4.50 meters.

Gavin Colley (Tunkhannock, PA) closed second in the 60-meter dash in 7.09 seconds and freshman William McDermott (Lansdowne, PA) ended third in the 3,000-meter run in 8:39.51. Both were the best in their fields among Division III athletes.

It was the Pride's first meet as a team since winning their fourth straight MAC title last winter.

Senior Erica Szpynda (Berwick, PA), an NCAA outdoor qualifier in the shot put last spring, won this meet's shot put at 13.41 meters. Junior Rachel Heisler (Boyertown, PA) took second in the weight throw at 14.31 meters and was tops among Division III athletes.

The men's squad competes next Saturday at the Haverford Holiday Meet. The women do not compete again until January 18 at the Widener Dual Meet.
