Men’s Track and Field Ends First Among D-III Schools at Thompson Invitational

Widener's men's track and field squad was tops among Division III squads and the women also had several strong outings at the Thompson Invitational in Newark, DE.
 
Senior All-American Michael Garrity (Glenolden, PA) was one of three winners for the Pride as he took the 800-meter run in 1:58.31.  Michael Ciavarelli (Secane, PA) captured the 500-meter run in 1:07.49 and fellow freshman Mike Recla (Bloomsburg, PA) took the shot put at 15.8 meters.
 
Freshman Chris Garrity (Glenolden, PA) was second in the 1000-meter run at 2:32.91, sophomore Michael Quinn (Conshohocken, PA) closed fourth in 2:34.60 and Brian Benkhadra (Olney, MD) ended fifth in 2:37.32.
 
Senior Dennis Conn (Morton, PA) had a pair of second-place finishes, running 800 meters in 2:01.11 and the mile in 4:22.96.  Sophomore Tyler Schmalhofer (Elizabethtown, PA) was second in the 500-meter run in 1:07.59.
 
Second through fifth place in the weight throw belonged to the Pride.  Sophomore Eric Solomon (Columbia, PA) covered 15.79 meters, senior Edmund Maloney (Lincoln University, PA) threw 15.6 meters, freshman Tyler Williams (Hanover, PA) followed at 15.44 meters and junior William Wall (Williamstown, NJ) was at 14.74 meters.
 
Sophomore Dennis Nguyen (Springfield, PA) was third in the pole vault at 4.35 meters, sophomore William Betts (Wayne, PA) ended fifth in the 400-meter dash in 53.11 seconds and freshman Antonio Richardson (Cartersville, VA) closed fifth in the long jump by covering 6.05 meters.
 
The men finished with 123 points, besting Delaware Track Club's 122 points and Rowan's 96 points.
 
For the women, freshman Brittany Diehl (Havertown, PA) closed second in the 500-meter dash in 1:21.38 and senior Emilie Keane (Haddonfield, PA) was fifth in 1:27.81.  Sophomore Colleen Spiller (Flemington, NJ) ended fifth in the high jump at 1.45 meters and freshman Amanda-Renee Daniels (Lumberton, NJ) was fifth in the weight throw at 13.25 meters.
 
The women's 4x800-meter relay was fifth in 11:12.93 and included Keane, junior Ashley Callahan (Clementon, NJ), Chelsea Morrison (Philadelphia, PA) and fellow freshman Tara Moken (Somerdale, NJ).
 
The squads will compete at the Widener Field Meet on Friday.
