Upset-Minded Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short in Loss to No. 14 Cabrini

(box score)

Widener battled throughout against 14th-ranked Cabrini in a clash of unbeaten squads, but was handed a 94-87 loss at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Aston, PA.

The first half as a great display of shooting by both teams as Widener hit 48 percent (15-of-31) from the field and Cabrini was good on 47 percent (15-of-32).  Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) drilled all six of his shots in the stanza for 12 points with fellow senior Perry Wright (Severn, MD) and junior Rob McPherson (Bowie, MD) netting 10 apiece for the Pride, who were down 41-38 at the break.

Cabrini (2-0) began to widen its lead in the second half, but Widener (4-1) would not go away as it was a one-possession game for most of the last five minutes.  But the Cavaliers shot a blistering 57 percent (18-of-32) from the floor in the half and drilled five 3-pointers.

Wright continued what has been a red-hot start by scoring 25 points, matching his career high from January 11 against Alvernia, and also hitting four 3-pointers to equal a personal best.  McPherson had 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting and seven rebounds to give him 17 points per game over the last three contests for the Pride, who shot 44 percent (29-of-66) for the game and hit seven 3-pointers.

Brennan, who hit his first eight shots, scored 16 points and junior Lamar Jackson (Philadelphia, PA) added 14 for Widener.

Jeremy Knowles poured in 24 points off the bench with AJ Williams and John Boyd each adding 17 for the Cavaliers.

Widener return to the court Wednesday at home against Alvernia as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game start at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 contest.
