Seniors Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) from the women's soccer team and James Woodley (Pittsgrove, NJ) from the football squad were named Widener's Outstanding Athletes of the Year at the school's Senior Awards Night.
Baer capped a remarkable career by being named All-Commonwealth Conference a fourth straight year, picked to the first team a third consecutive season and third team All-Middle Atlantic Region. She was named second team all-region in 2008.
Baer ends a spectacular career in which she was tabbed second team all-league as a defender in 2006, first team all-conference as a forward in 2007 and first team as a midfielder the last two years. She graduates first in school history with 40 assists, second with 29 goals and second with 98 points.
It was another standout campaign for Woodley, who was tabbed first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference a third straight year and second team All-East Region by D3Football.com. A four-year starter who constantly drew double teams, Woodley ended tied for fourth in the conference with 14.5 tackles for a loss, tied for eighth with 5.5 sacks and tied for 23rd with 5.7 tackles per game.
Woodley, who was invited to the East Preps Football Combine, had 19 tackles to tie for the third most in school history, 14 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks and five tackles for a loss October 31 against Lebanon Valley.
Seniors Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) from softball and James Green (Lansdale, PA) were presented the Pride Award, given to the student-athletes who best exemplify Widener both on and off the field.
Dougherty was named first team All-Commonwealth Conference in 2008 after ending third in the league with a 1.79 ERA to go with an 11-3 record, helping Widener share the league's regular-season title. Last year, she ended 11-8 with a 2.31 ERA to go with a .379 batting average.
She is batting .370 this season and owns 10-5 record to help the Pride clinch a third straight trip to the conference tournament.
Green won the shot put at the MAC Indoor Championships a third straight year at 15.62 meters, helping Widener win its 14th league title. He has won the outdoor shot put championship for the MAC two consecutive years entering next weekend's finals.
As a sophomore in 2008, Green was named the MAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year after winning the shot put and the javelin throw.
