Women's Lacrosse Rolls to 21-11 Triumph Over Manhattanville

(box score)

Widener took control late in the first half and cruised to a 21-11 Middle Atlantic Conference victory over Manhattanville at Edith R. Dixon Field.

In their seemingly annual scoring barrage, the Pride (10-5, 7-3 MAC) netted the last five goals of the opening half that spanned just over three minutes for a 15-7 lead.  Freshman Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA), senior Jackie Elliott (Upper Darby, PA), Rachel Porter (Medford, NJ), fellow sophomore Jen Harnden (Hershey, PA) and junior Mellany Broomall (Clarksboro, NJ) all tallied in that stretch.

Elliott closed with six goals for the fifth time this season for Widener, which reached double figures in victories for just sixth time in its 32-year history.  The squad is one win shy of matching the school record set in 2003, when it went 11-5.

Broomall scored four goals, including a natural hat trick in the second half, Harnden also netted four and Porter had three.  #Linda Salcedo# (Media, PA) made six saves.

Melissa Goncalves scored five times and Kirstin Betsill made 11 saves for the Valiants (4-13, 4-8) in their season finale.

Widener sits in fourth place by itself in the MAC, 1 1/2 games behind FDU-Florham (9-2) for third and one-half game clear of Eastern and Lycoming (7-4) for fifth.

Widener on Thursday visits King's, beginning at 4:00 pm in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
