Softball Wins Nightcap in Extra Innings to Gain Split vs. Muhlenberg

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener scratched out a run in the bottom of the eighth inning in game two for a 5-4 victory after suffering a 3-1 loss to Muhlenberg in Chester, PA.

Widener (21-13) in the eighth had freshman Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) placed on second base as per international rules, but she was not there long.  Junior Astyn DiNorscia (Parkesburg, PA) placed down a perfect sacrifice bunt that was thrown away for an error, allowing Hargadon to score.

The Pride in the fifth inning scored three times for a 4-2 lead.  Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) had an RBI groundout, fellow senior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) ripped a run-scoring double and senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) had an RBI single.

The Mules made it 4-3 in the sixth on an RBI single from Ashley Brewer.  They tied it in the seventh when Jenna Littman scored as a grounder from Devon Barber was misplayed for an error.

Dougherty (7-5) got the win in relief, allowing an unearned run and three hits over three innings with four strikeouts.  She also went 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Angie Sisco (1-3) was charged with five runs – four earned – and nine hits over seven innings.  She and Jess Kasza had two hits apiece.

Muhlenberg (12-17) in game one scored all the runs it would need in the fourth inning on Brewer's two-run single for a 2-0 cushion.  Kasza added an RBI double in the seventh for a 3-0 margin.

Senior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) made things interesting in the seventh with her third homer of the season, but Widener could get no closer.

Alyssa Bruckner (5-8) pitched solidly for Muhlenberg, yielding one run and four hits over seven innings and facing just five batters above the minimum.  Barber ended with three hits.

Shultz (7-7) surrendered three runs and eight hits over seven innings despite five strikeouts.

Connolly had a hit in game one and two in the second contest, bumping her hitting streak to seven games.

Widener on Wednesday visits Neumann for a 4:00 pm in Aston, PA.
