(Game 1) / (Game 2)
Senior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) took a perfect game into the seventh inning, yielding just one hit and two baserunners in Widener's 7-0 win over Washington (MD) that preceded a come-from-behind 5-4 triumph in Chestertown, MD.
Dougherty (1-2), who had not pitched in 12 days, showed no ill effects with six strikeouts and a seventh-inning walk. She got eight fly outs and six ground outs for her fifth career shutout.
Just three outs from history, Dougherty faced Leigh Carbutt to lead off the seventh. Carbutt hit a ball that sliced toward the right-field line in which senior Jamie Schmucker (Holmes, PA) dove for, but was just out of her reach for a double.
Widener (7-3) plated six runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 7-0 lead, highlighted by senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) hitting her second career grand slam. Senior Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) and junior Astyn DiNorscia (Parkesburg, PA) had RBI singles apiece in the frame.
Connolly and senior Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) each had two of Widener's 10 hits. Freshman Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) gave the Pride a 1-0 lead in the third with an RBI single.
Meaghan Kimme (2-1) allowed seven runs – four earned – and 10 hits over seven innings with five strikeouts for the Shorewomen (5-3).
Widener in game two rallied from 4-0 down to tie thanks to four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Schmucker lined a two-out, two-run double to left-center field and junior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) followed with a two-RBI double to the same spot.
The Pride took the lead in the top of the seventh. Dougherty got a leadoff single and took second on a two-out single from junior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA). Brubaker followed with an RBI single to center that plated Dougherty, extending the Pride's winning streak to five.
Lindsey Glascock and Shaelan Nottingham had RBI in the first inning with Carbutt and Sally Snover getting runs home in the second for Washington.
Shultz (4-1) notched her fourth straight win, yielding four unearned runs and four hits over seven innings. She, Dougherty and Phillips all had two hits.
Connolly did not have a hit in the second game, snapping her career-high-tying hitting streak at nine. She had a hit in every game this season before the nightcap.
Brittany Walter (2-2) allowed five runs and 10 hits over seven innings for the Shorewomen.
