Widener University announced Tuesday that David Wood has resigned his duties as head football and golf coach due to medical reasons and to spend more time with his family.

In Wood’s seven years as head football coach at Widener, he amassed a 41-32 record.  The Pride won the Middle Atlantic Conference championship in 2007 and Eastern College Athletic Conference bowl games in 2005 and 2006.  Wood served as an assistant coach from 1991-1995 and again from 1997-2002.  Wood has also served as head golf coach for 10 years.

A 1991 graduate of Widener, Wood was a two-time All-MAC player, receiving citations as a Division III All-American and Academic All-District player as a senior.

“I want to thank Dave Wood for his years of dedicated service to Widener University and the football team,” Athletics Director Jack Shafer said. “Dave has worked very hard to maintain a high level of competitiveness on the field and we appreciate his stewardship from his time as an assistant through his head coaching career with the university.  We wish Dave the best as he moves on to new endeavors.”

Shafer said a national search will begin immediately to find a replacement.  Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Mike Guille will assume duties as the interim head coach during the search process.  Guille has been an assistant coach at Widener since 1992 and has been defensive coordinator since 2007.
