Women's Basketball Runs Away Early From Elizabethtown in 59-45 Victory

Widener scored the game’s first 11 points and saw three of its players tally in double figures for a 59-45 Commonwealth Conference triumph at Elizabethtown.

The Pride’s run came in the game’s first six minutes and the squad held the Blue Jays without a basket in the first 7 1/2 minutes. Freshman Lil Carney (Narbeth, PA) netted five points in that span and sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) added four.

Pritz scored 11 points in the opening half for Widener (9-9, 5-2 CC), which opened a 30-19 halftime lead by shooting 48 percent (13-of-27) from the floor.  Elizabethtown (5-10, 2-5) was limited to just 30 percent (8-of-27).

The Blue Jays closed to 41-34 with 9:27 remaining before the Pride went on a 10-2 burst for a 51-36 cushion with 6:16 to play. Junior Alex Held (Westminster, MD) tallied five points in that time.

Pritz ended with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting with seven rebounds, Carney had 15 and seven with Held contributing 12 points for Widener, which shot 49 percent (24-of-49) from the field.

Megan Strohman poured in 17 points for the Blue Jays, who shot 35 percent (19-of-55) from the floor and attempted just one free throw.

Widener is off until Saturday, when it hosts Messiah at 1:00 pm.

James Woodley
Football

Senior James Woodley was named Widener's Men's Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

It was another standout campaign for Woodley, who was tabbed first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference a third straight year and second team All-East Region by D3Football.com.  A four-year starter who constantly drew double teams, Woodley ended tied for fourth in the conference with 14.5 tackles for a loss, tied for eighth with 5.5 sacks and tied for 23rd with 5.7 tackles per game.

 

Woodley, who was invited to the East Preps Football Combine, had 19 tackles to tie for the third most in school history, 14 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks and five tackles for a loss October 31 against Lebanon Valley.

Sam Baer
Women's Soccer

Senior Sam Baer was named Widener's Women's Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

Baer capped a remarkable career by being named All-Commonwealth Conference a fourth straight year, picked to the first team a third consecutive season and third team All-Middle Atlantic Region.  She was named second team all-region in 2008.

 

Baer ends a spectacular career in which she was tabbed second team all-league as a defender in 2006, first team all-conference as a forward in 2007 and first team as a midfielder the last two years.  She graduates first in school history with 40 assists, second with 29 goals and second with 98 points.
