Women's Basketball Uses Second-Half Run to Pull Away From Alvernia

Junior Alex Held (Westminster, MD) keyed the decisive run for Widener, which used a combination of great shooting and tough defense in the second half for a 68-61 Commonwealth Conference victory over Alvernia at Schwartz Center.

 

Held scored eight points during Widener’s 12-0 run to open the second half for a 44-33 lead with 17:27 left.  She netted the final six points in the spurt, capping it on a 3-pointer.

 

It was the catalyst for a half in which the Pride (8-9, 4-2 CC) outscored the Crusaders 36-28 by shooting 50 percent (14-of-28) from the floor.  Alvernia (7-5, 3-3) was limited to just 33 percent shooting (10-of-30) in that span.

 

Held finished with 13 points to fall one shy of her career best, freshman Lil Carney (Narbeth, PA) had 12 points and seven assists with sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) adding 10 points and seven rebounds.

 

Alex Velazquez notched 18 points and 11 rebounds with Julie Hahn adding nine points and seven assists for Alvernia, which shot 36 percent (20-of-55) overall and was 1-of-7 from 3-point range.

 

Widener on Saturday visits Elizabethtown at 2:00 pm.

James Woodley
Football

Senior James Woodley was named Widener's Men's Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

It was another standout campaign for Woodley, who was tabbed first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference a third straight year and second team All-East Region by D3Football.com.  A four-year starter who constantly drew double teams, Woodley ended tied for fourth in the conference with 14.5 tackles for a loss, tied for eighth with 5.5 sacks and tied for 23rd with 5.7 tackles per game.

 

Woodley, who was invited to the East Preps Football Combine, had 19 tackles to tie for the third most in school history, 14 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks and five tackles for a loss October 31 against Lebanon Valley.

Women's Soccer

Senior Sam Baer was named Widener's Women's Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

Baer capped a remarkable career by being named All-Commonwealth Conference a fourth straight year, picked to the first team a third consecutive season and third team All-Middle Atlantic Region.  She was named second team all-region in 2008.

 

Baer ends a spectacular career in which she was tabbed second team all-league as a defender in 2006, first team all-conference as a forward in 2007 and first team as a midfielder the last two years.  She graduates first in school history with 40 assists, second with 29 goals and second with 98 points.
