(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener’s dream of its first Commonwealth Conference title fell one game short as it dropped two games, 6-4 and 12-5, to Elizabethtown in the tournament’s championship round in West Lawn, PA.

The Pride (21-17-1) in game one took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on a two-run single from freshman Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA). But the Blue Jays (27-13) rallied for three runs in the sixth for a 6-4 cushion, keyed by Rodney Francis’ tiebreaking two-run homer.

Dallastown, PA freshman Craig Ricks (1-1) was charged with three runs and four hits over 3 1/3 innings for Widener. Sophomore Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) and junior Dennis Morgan (Blue Bell, PA) had two hits apiece.

Adam Hartzell (8-2) permitted two runs and two hits over two innings for the Blue Jays.

With the title coming down to an ultimate game, things fell apart as Elizabethtown plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tom Semanek highlighted the frame with a two-run homer.

Morgan rapped three hits and junior Mike Villari (Holland, PA) had a double and a home run for Widener. Harleysville, PA junior Alex Gelegotis (0-1) was tagged with five runs – three earned – and four hits over one-third of an inning.

Matt Vinagro (8-1) gave up five runs – three earned – and eight hits over nine innings for Elizabethtown. Sam Heaps went 4-for-4 with three RBI.
