Widener Teams Set to Compete in Conference Championships

It will be a busy week around Widener University athletics as many of its spring teams prepare for play in the Middle Atlantic/Commonwealth Conference Championships.
 
The third-seeded men’s lacrosse team (9-8, 7-3 MAC), coming off a 10-7 victory Monday over Eastern in the first round of the MAC Tournament, on Wednesday visits No. 2 seed Lycoming in the semifinals. Game time in Williamsport, PA is 4:00 pm.
 
The Pride’s defense has played a major role, posting a 6.92 goals against average as a team with sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Carney (Ridley, PA) owning a 7.26 mark. Freshman Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) is fourth in the league with 38 goals and junior Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA) is second on the team with 26.

The baseball team (19-15-1, 8-7 CC) clinched the third seed for the double-elimination Commonwealth Conference Tournament. Widener opens competition Thursday against second-seeded Lebanon Valley, beginning at 7:30 pm in West Lawn, PA.
 
The starting rotation of junior Dan Gross (Coatesville, PA), and freshmen Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA), Joe Sessa (Broomall, PA) and Mike Pappas (Brookhaven, PA) have a combined 12 wins with a 1.83 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Freshman Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) paces the squad with a .383 batting average, seven home runs and 30 RBI. He also is batting .519 in league games.

The softball team (22-16, 6-6) earned the number three seed for the double-elimination Commonwealth Conference Tournament. The squad begins play Friday vs. second-seeded Lebanon Valley at 1:00 pm in Grantham, PA.

Junior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ – 10-7, 2.37 ERA) and sophomore Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA – 10-6, 2.97 ERA) give Widener a formidable one-two pitching combination. Senior designated player Rachel O’Leary (Coatesville, PA) leads the team with a .345 batting average and junior shortstop Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) paces the squad with six home runs and 26 RBI.
 
The track and field teams will compete Thursday through Saturday at the MAC Outdoor Championships.
 
Junior James Green (Lansdale, PA), last year’s Field Athlete of the Meet, will be back to defend his championship in the shot put and the javelin. He also is the two-time defending MAC indoor champion in the shot put.
 
Junior Nikita Halteman (Hatfield, PA) last winter captured the MAC indoor title in the shot put. She returns to help a women’s team which last spring closed second at the outdoor championships.

The golf team on Monday completed play at the Commonwealth Conference Championship, finishing fourth. Junior James Presto (Bethlehem, PA) and senior Josh Minton (Cinnaminson, NJ) each finished tied for sixth with 162. Presto had three birdies on the front nine each of the first two days and Minton hit a hole-in-one during the final round.

James Woodley
Football

Senior James Woodley was named Widener's Men's Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

It was another standout campaign for Woodley, who was tabbed first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference a third straight year and second team All-East Region by D3Football.com.  A four-year starter who constantly drew double teams, Woodley ended tied for fourth in the conference with 14.5 tackles for a loss, tied for eighth with 5.5 sacks and tied for 23rd with 5.7 tackles per game.

 

Woodley, who was invited to the East Preps Football Combine, had 19 tackles to tie for the third most in school history, 14 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks and five tackles for a loss October 31 against Lebanon Valley.

Women's Soccer

Senior Sam Baer was named Widener's Women's Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

Baer capped a remarkable career by being named All-Commonwealth Conference a fourth straight year, picked to the first team a third consecutive season and third team All-Middle Atlantic Region.  She was named second team all-region in 2008.

 

Baer ends a spectacular career in which she was tabbed second team all-league as a defender in 2006, first team all-conference as a forward in 2007 and first team as a midfielder the last two years.  She graduates first in school history with 40 assists, second with 29 goals and second with 98 points.
