Women's Soccer Handed 4-2 Loss by Arcadia

Widener permitted two goals in each half and was dealt a 4-2 Commonwealth Conference loss by Arcadia at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

 

Widener (11-3-2, 2-2 CC) could not contain Katie O’Malley, who had two goals and two assists for Arcadia (12-0-3, 4-0).  It was the Knights’ sixth straight win.

 

Ashley Kneuppel knocked home O’Malley’s free kick in the 14th minute for a 1-0 Arcadia lead.  O’Malley doubled the margin in the 35th minute, drilling a 30-yard free kick inside the top right corner.

 

The Pride got one back in the 51st minute for a 2-1 deficit.  Rachel Kyprianou (Shrewsbury, PA) scored on a 10-yard shot off passes from sophomore Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) and junior Caryinna Yenchak (Ashley, PA).

 

Stephanie Welch tallied in the 63rd minute and O’Malley banged home a shot off the crossbar in the 74th minute for a 4-1 Knights lead.

 

Sophomore Brittany Harvis (Delran, NJ) capped the scoring for Widener on a goal that squirted inside the right post.  Balentine got her second assist of the night.

 

Harvis had five shots for the Pride, who ended with a 15-9 edge.  Senior Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) made two saves.

 

Jacki Law totaled five saves for the Knights.

 

Widener on Saturday hosts Lebanon Valley as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team on Senior Day.  The women’s game starts at 1:00 pm, followed by the men’s contest at 4:00 pm.

Sophomore Abby Schaffer automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships, winning the pole vault at 3.85 meters at the ECAC Championships.  Her mark also broke the meet and facility record.
